I offer the following so-called 'Practical Skills' courses in our Department of English: Phonetics, English Speaking (four levels), English Writing (two levels), and Reading (two levels). My applied and cultural courses include EFL Teaching Methodology and Understanding of Different Cultures. All of these classes are held only in the target language--English.
While these courses are typically intended for our undergraduates, many graduate students have in the past also taken part, which I have always encouraged. I believe that student-student contact in the classroom is one of the most effective ways to establish an active learning environment, and it is especially valuable when some of the class members (such as graduate students) come from different educational, cultural and age backgrounds.
